The Tarot is based upon the Tree of Life and the Tree of Life is always cognate with the Tetragrammaton. Now the brief and over simplified explanation of the tetragrammaton goes something like this:

The union of the Father and Mother produces Twin, the Son going forward to the Daughter, the Daughter returning the energy to the Father; by this cycle of change the stability and the eternity of the universe be assured.

Now It is necessary, in order to understand the Tarot, to go back in history to the Matriarchal Age (exogamy), to the time when succession was not through the first born son of the King, but through his Daughter. The King was therefore not king by inheritance, but by right of conquest. In the most stable dynasties, the new King was always a stranger, a foreigner, what is more.. he often had to kill the old king and marry the King’s daughter. This system ensured the virility and capacity of every king as opposed to the attenuation of continuous inbreeding which happened later… (Sorry about the ears and teeth British Royal Family, bad luck) The stranger had to win his bride in open competition. In the oldest fairytales this motive is continually repeated. This ambitious stranger is often a troubadour; nearly always disguised and often in a repulsive form. i.e.. Beauty and the Beast . There is also often a corresponding camouflage about the king’s daughter seen in the case of Cinderlla and the Enchanted Princess. The tale of Aladdin also gives the whole of this fable in a very elaborate form, packed with technical tales of magic and such. Here then is the foundation of the legend of the Wandering Prince… and, note well, he’s always the FOOL of the family. The connection between foolishness and holiness runs deep. In the east the madman is believed to be “possessed”, a holy man or prophet. So deep is this identity that is actually embedded into todays language. The word “silly” is derived from the German for Selig, which means holy or blessed.

It is said that this FOOL stirs within us all during the return of the Spring as we are naturally bewildered by nature’s majesty as she returns back to life. It is to be considered a salutary custom when we externalize this subconscious impulse through ceremonial means…. but all such symbolism eventually defeats itself hence today’s understanding of APRIL FOOLS DAY… rather diluted i’d say.

In this idea of the Great Fool is a definite doctrine. The world is always looking for a savior and the doctrine in question is philosophically more than a doctrine, it is a plain fact. Salvation, whatever salvation means, is not to be obtained on any reasonable terms. Reason is an impasse, reason is damnation; only madness and foolishness, divine madness offers an issue. The law of lord Chancellor will not serve; the law giver must be an epileptic camel driver like Mohammed, a megalomaniac start up like Napoleon or even an exile, three parts learned.. one part crazy, and one part attic dweller in Soho, like a Karl Marx. There is only one thing common among such persons. They are all mad with inspiration. Nearly all primitive people processes this tradition, at least in a diluted form. They respect the wandering lunatic, for it maybe that he is the messenger of the most high. So next time some foolish madman of a stranger wanders into your life… treat him nicely.

The power to create is one of the essential faculties of man’s spiritual nature. It is not only the artist who creates; the artist is simply the human being with the further faculty of translating his creations into the materials of the physical world. Essentially I believe that anyone who is capable of thought or emotion is capable of creation in the material of the astral world - and is not only capable of such creation but does create continually. The stronger the emotion, or the more exact the thought, correspondingly will as the astral creation be stronger and more specific.

My Ode to Giordano Bruno:

Giordano Bruno was a philospher/theologian and an outspoken critic of many of the religious, philosophical, and scientific beliefs of his time. Although he was not a scientist and had limited understanding of disciplines like astronomy, he was a strong defender of the heliocentric theory of our solar system as presented by Nicholas Copernicus. Passionate and confrontational, Bruno was eventually executed as a heretic.

Bruno was born “Fillipo” Bruno in Nola, near Naples, in 1548 to Biovanni Bruno, a soldier, and Fraulissa Savolino. He took the name of Giordano when he entered the Catholic Dominican order in 1563. He was ordained a priest in 1572. His original views and criticisms of accepted theological doctrines soon garnered him an official accusation of heresy in 1576. He first fled to Rome and then France. At Lyons he completed his work Clavis Magna or “Great Key,” which described his art of memory-training. Bruno’s expertise in memory-training brought him to the attention of many patrons around the world. In 1583 he went to England where, for a short period, he won the favor of Queen Elizabeth. Living in the house of the French ambassador in London, he completed his book Cena de le Cenert (“The Ash Wednesday Supper”), in which he unreservedly accepted the Copernican heliocentric model of our solar system, in which the Sun is the center of the solar system and not the earth, as was widely believed at the time. He also completed De L’Infinito, Universo e Mondi (“On the Infinite Universe and Worlds”), in which he stated that the universe is infinite, with an infinite number worlds, and that all the worlds are inhabited by intelligent beings.

Bruno invariably outraged both his patrons and the institutions that supported him. His travels took him to Wittenberg, Prague, Helmstedt, and Frankfurt, where he taught, wrote extensively on philosophy and theology, and lived off the largesse of others. In 1591 he accepted an invitation from a patron to live in Venice. However, he was arrested by the Catholic Inquisition and tried as a heretic. He initially recanted and was sent to Rome in 1592, where he was imprisoned for the next several years. When he refused to recant his beliefs permanently, he was burned at the stake in 1600.

Last time I saw him I photographed him getting into a fight at his party Lil Death which happens to be tonight.
